How to choose a Ford dealer in Arizona

Quick answer

Pick the Ford dealer that gives you a written out-the-door price, is upfront about add-ons, has the exact vehicle you want, and puts you with a salesperson who answers questions directly. You don't have to buy from the closest dealer: any Ford dealer can handle your warranty and recall work, so you can buy where the deal and the experience are best and service close to home.

I sell Fords for a living, at a Ford dealership in Dewey, in the Prescott area. That makes me biased, so here's the honest version: the right dealer for you is the one that's clear about price, has the vehicle you actually want, and puts you with someone who answers your questions directly. Sometimes that's the dealer down the street. Sometimes it's worth a drive.

1. Compare out-the-door prices, not sticker prices

The number on the window isn't what you'll pay. The out-the-door price includes the vehicle, the dealer's documentation fee, any add-ons, sales tax, title and registration. It's the only number that lets you compare two dealers fairly.

Ask every dealer for it in writing, by text or email, for the specific vehicle. A dealer who won't give you one before you come in is telling you something.

2. Ask what's already been added

Some vehicles arrive on the lot with dealer-installed extras: protection packages, tint, wheel locks, nitrogen-filled tires and so on. Some are worth it. Some aren't. Either way, you should know about them before you show up, not at the finance desk.

Ask: "Is anything installed or added to the price beyond the window sticker?" A straight answer is a good sign.

3. Make sure the exact vehicle is there

Online inventory isn't always current. Before you drive, ask the dealer to confirm the vehicle by stock number or VIN, and to send photos or a short video. This matters most if you're driving an hour or more, from Phoenix, Flagstaff or Kingman, for example.

I send a video walkaround of the exact vehicle to anyone who asks. It saves both of us a wasted trip.

4. Pick the salesperson, not just the dealership

You'll spend most of your time with one person. Look for reviews that mention a salesperson by name, and pay attention to how they answer your first few questions. Do they answer what you asked, or steer you somewhere else? Do they know the vehicle, including towing and payload if that matters to you?

If you're towing a camper, boat or horse trailer, ask the salesperson to show you the payload number on the door sticker of the exact truck. If they can't explain it, keep looking. My Ranger towing guide shows what that conversation should sound like.

5. Don't let distance decide for you

You don't have to buy from the closest Ford dealer. Warranty and recall work can be done at any Ford dealer, so you can buy where the price and the experience are best, then have routine service done near home.

A longer drive makes sense when one dealer has the exact build you want, gives you a clear price, and has already shown you the vehicle. It doesn't make sense if you're driving on a hunch.

What I'd do, step by step

  1. Narrow it to two or three vehicles that fit how you'll actually use them.
  2. Text two or three dealers about specific stock numbers, and ask each for an out-the-door price and a list of add-ons.
  3. Ask for a video or photos of the exact vehicle.
  4. Book a time with the salesperson who gave the clearest answers, so the vehicle is ready when you arrive.

FAQ

Common Questions

Do I have to buy from the Ford dealer closest to me?

No. You can buy a new or used Ford from any dealer you like. Warranty and recall work can be done at any Ford dealer, so you can buy in one town and have it serviced close to home.

What should I ask a Ford dealer before I visit?

Ask for an out-the-door price in writing, a list of any add-ons or accessories already installed, confirmation that the exact vehicle (by stock or VIN) is on the lot, and photos or a video of it.

What is an out-the-door price?

It's the total you'll actually pay: the vehicle price plus dealer fees, any add-ons, tax, title and registration. It's the only number that lets you compare two dealers fairly.
